Description
L: 14cm; W:20-22.5cm;
Conspicuous bird with dark brown back and central tail feathers; reddish tail, ending in a dark band; prominent pale eyebrow; light belly. Males in rut have a blue throat delimited by a thin black band and a thicker reddish one on their chest. In winter, males have a white throat and brown chest with or without any blue. The female has a white throat and bib, without blue or with a little on the lower part of the chest; They have two black bands. Juveniles are distinguished by their pale eyebrow and white throat.
