Description

L: 14cm; W:22-24cm;

Species with marked sexual dimorphism. The breeding male is very striking, with a white forehead and eyebrow, black face and throat; orange chest and flanks; grey back; grey-brown wings. The female lacks white on the forehead, black on the throat, and grey back and underparts. Both sexes have a red tail and chestnut chest and flanks. Juveniles are similar to females but with numerous white spots. In the first winter has an orange-spotted chest.
