Description

L: 12-13cm; W:21.5-24cm;

Males in breeding plumage have a black back and white below; white grey forehead and rump; black wings with a wide white patch, and a black tail with white spots on the outer feathers. Females and non-breeding males have more brownish-grey upperparts, brownish wings and tails, with reduced white markings, and white underparts with a greyish tinge. Juveniles have numerous pale spots.
