Description
L: 28-34cm; W: 56-60cm;
In breeding plumage with black back, head and neck, with golden feathers behind the eyes; chestnut flanks; white belly. In nonbreeding plumage dark upperparts; whitish underparts; black head only up to the eyes. – Juveniles with light brown upperparts; scapulars usually with traces of down on the tip.
