Back sandy-brown in color, with stripes; paler underparts mottled on flanks; white stripe on the eyebrow and neck; male with dark throat tawny chest streaked with white; flanks with chestnut-spotted feathers; female with whitish throat; and with a tawny chest with abundant brown or blackish spots; flanks with brown spots. Juveniles with plumage similar to that of the female; new plumage; wing without moult contrast and with dark feathers;
