Description
L: 18cm; W:29-33cm.
Striking bird for its colour and size. Both sexes have a similar appearance; if anything, the female with paler plumage than the male. Brown back with ocher rump, wine-grey underparts, head with a black stripe around bill and chin, greyish collar; wing with a white spot on primaries; secondaries with a shiny black external band in the male, grey in the female. Very thick conical beak; tail with black feathers finished in white. Juveniles with mottled plumage, lack the black bib and have a very subtle mask.
