Description

L: 19-21cm; W: 47-54cm;

The smallest of the owls of the Iberian Peninsula. It has a gray-brown to reddish-brown back, with a fine pattern of stripes; paler abdomen, also vermiculated; flight feathers with ocher barring; finely barred tail; round head, with “ears” that it unfurls when on alert; bluish-black bill and yellow eyes. Both sexes are similar in plumage.- Juveniles similar in appearance to adults, but central tail feathers are narrow and sharp-ended with barring composed of white areas bordered by irregular black lines
