Description

60-71cm.

White head, with a black band on the sides; dark brown upperparts; white underparts, with brown pectoral band; wings dark above and light below, with a dark spot; primaries with black tips and yellow eyes. Male usually with a thin pectoral band or no band; small and median underwing coverts white. Female with broad, dark, well-marked pectoral band; lesser and median underwing coverts with dark spots. Juveniles with mottled buff upperparts; fluted hood; greater coverts with pale tip; light-tipped flight feathers; secondaries barred and without subterminal dark band; large underwing coverts forming a faint band; buff-dyed underparts and brown eyes.
