Description
L:25-29cm; W: 40-45cm;
Anatidae of small size, in breeding plumage it is dark brown, with a chestnut face and neck; base of bill black with a pale spot. In winter and juveniles light coloured, brown above and almost white below; no light spot at base of bill. Both sexes are of similar plumage, if anything the females duller than the males. Juveniles with traces of chicken scratching on the sides of the head and neck; cheeks and back of neck with light streaking; dark iris.
